The Inter Provincials took place this week in George, at George Golf Club. What a beautiful golf course. The tournament is sponsored by Pick 'n Pay. The week starts off with the Pick 'n Pay Am Am on the Sunday where the top 20 girls in SA get to play with Pick 'n Pay guests. We had 6 of our Gauteng girls playing and 5 of them were in the prizes at the prize giving dinner on Sunday. The practice round took place on Monday, the weather was great and continued to be gorgeous throughout the week.
The main business started on Tuesday with the qualifying strokeplay rounds of foursome in the morning and the singles in the afternoon. Winners of the Jean Tindell Trophy were Gauteng North A with our Gauteng Lions in second place, to qualify 1 and 2 in the matchplay rounds, Western Province and Boland A finished in 3 and 4 respectively. The Gauteng Tigers finished in 4th place in the A Inter Provincial, Section 2, with KZN in 1st place, North West in 2nd and FS&NC in 3rd place.
Wednesday was the first round of matchplay, starting with foursomes in the morning and singles in the afternoon. The Lions took on Western Province A, beating them and taking the first 2 points of the day up for grabs, Gauteng North A beat Boland and in so doing claimed the next 2 points avalable for the day. The Tigers lost to KZN and North West beat FS&NC.
Thursday was another beautiful day in George, the Lions took on Boland A and beat them, claiming a valuable 2 points going into the final day, Gauteng North beat Western Province A to finish tied with Gauteng Lions on 4 points for the week. The Gauteng Tigers were a team to be reckoned with and beat North West to get their first 2 points on the board, KZN beat FS&NC to go to the top of the leader board with 4 points.
Friday was the final day and the two big guns, Gauteng Lions and Gauteng North A, were at the top of the leader board and going head to head. Unfortunately the Lions lost all their foursome matches in the morning, giving GN a 3 point lead going in to the afternoon singles. Gauteng needed to win 5 of the 6 singles, a tough ask against GN wo only needed to win 2 singles. Gauteng missed out by 1 point, the narrowest of margins. They managed to win 4 matches and lose 2, a very close finish.
The most amazing feat was that our top 4 managed to beat GN's top 4, two of whom are number one and four in South Africa.
Lara Weinstein beat Kim Williams (SA's number 1) 2/1. Michelle Leigh beat Henriette Frylinck (SA's number 4) 1 up. Nicole Garcia (SA's number 7) beat Nobuhle Dlamini (SA's number 8) 1 up and Lauren Bekker beat Emma Jo Du Bruyn, 3/2. Well done Gauteng Lions, a force to reckoned with.
The Tigers took on FS&NC and drew with them. The Tigers finished 3rd in their division, a very good week of golf played by our "Baby" team.
We are very proud of our Lions and Tigers, next year we will lift the trophy again!!!!
